Building Links Through Blog Comments

Building quality one-way links is a key in good search engine rankings. One great way to do this is to comment on blogs. When doing this, there are a couple of 'do's' and 'dont's' that I would like to point out, and I'll walk through some steps to finding blogs, and what types of blogs you should comment on.

The best blogs you can comment on are high PR (definition of PR) blogs that are relevant to your website. You can go with low PR blogs that are relevant to your site, or high PR blogs that are not relevant to your site. Neither of those are as good, but both will work.

So how do you find a high-ranking blog that's relevant to your site? Simple answer: Google. Just search for some term that's relevant to your site, and tack on 'blog' at the end. For starters, you probably want to do at least ten blogs (you can always go back and do more later). If no blogs seem to show up under your search term, you can either try a different term, or go to a good blog directory and look around in there. Be resourceful.

So you've found a good blog that seems to be legitimate, and has good posts. Just comment on a post with a link back to your blog? Bad idea. What you don't want to do is spam. Spamming is bad, and anyone trying to do anything legitimate should stay away from spam. Don't put unrelevant material where it doesn't belong, because it annoys people, and they will ignore it. What you want to do is read the post. I know, it takes time, but you don't have to read it thouroughly. Just skim it, and find something that you can comment on. For example: "I liked that post. X point was quite interesting," or something of the sort. Then just leave a hypertext link back to your blog. Make it as if the link was your name, or your signature. If the site doesn't allow html, then just post your url with the "http://".

If you don't have the time to read the post, or if you're in a hurry, then you can always say 'nice post' and then sign it with your site. But you're more likely to be considered a spammer, and the blog owner may delete your comment. It's up to you.

you are right there. although commenting on other blogs will surely need a lot of time and patience in reading. otherwise, if you just post a simple "nice" "great" or any other similar one or two word remarks, you might be considered spamming.

hence, you are duty-bound to post a sensible comment.

am I making sense?

admin @ 1:08 am:

yeah your making sense, but I guess it comes down to how important is blogging to you. Because that generates a one way link which are very valuable. So if you really want to generate traffic then it's worth it. And I find that often you can read just the first paragraph and know enough about the article to write a comment. One technique that I find very useful is to ask them a question. If you ask them a question then they won't think your spamming. Ask them something related to their blog, like if they have a picture up ask them where they took it, something like that. Then make sure you subscribe to that post so that you can know when they reply. Then you write one more answer to thank them for answering their question and then you don't have to worry about going back again. And that way you've generated two back links, this person thinks your interested in your blog. And it didn't take alot of time. Does that make sense?

Another great way to find blogs to post on is with Entrecard.

I have favorited a huge list of blogs in my niche (IM/Make Money Online) that I go drop cards onto everyday. Now I have begun taking a look at most recent posts to see what the buzz around the blogosphere is, and it's been really entertaining and enlightening.

When one catches your eye, you will definitely want to read it, and comment! Like I am now :D

I have been reading these types of articles a lot lately. I think it is a very good idea. I am concerned about your desire to use it as only a traffic driving ploy as opposed to becoming a real member of the community. Don't you think it would be better to become an active member within that community? Let me explain.

You can then add relevant comments to the blog articles posted each day or whenever. Then as others read the blog and the comments, they come to look forward to your comments as well. You develop a strong following and an excellent reputation and others will click to see your website.

The strategy you propose in your comment to this article seems a little shortsighted to me. Because the only person that will go to your site is the blogger themselves. This means you only get one click on your website.

But, that blogger has other readers all anxious to read each day's blog. You will miss out on the rest of the potential traffic if you just do a "drive by" comment.

Imagine that your purpose is to get long term traffic to your site. People subscribing to your RSSfeeds. People visiting your site everyday. Well, if you comment many times on a website then the people who subscribe to that web site's feeds, will be more likely to visit your site. If your blog has relevant content these same people will subscribe to your feed.

The blogger may never subscribe to anyone else's feeds. He might be doing what you are doing running around looking for one time comment traffic. But imagine if that blogger has a feed reader base of over 1000 readers. These are people that have shown a propensity to return on a regular basis. Now some of those readers may become YOUR readers. Regular returning readers who leave relevant comments and your site becomes a corner marketplace with excellent discussions.

Just my 2 cents worth.

admin @ 2:05 pm:

That's a good idea to Tim, Thanks for the comment and I just advertised on your site.

admin @ 2:10 pm:

If you have that much time I agree. But if you are keeping a family, and a full time job, and only blogging as a hobby, you don't have enough time to be perfect. Though if you have time by all means try and woo the person into being a daily reader. on your site.
But I think in the long run. If you had to decide between ten links back to your site, or 3 good comments, and maybe one, maybe… becomes a consistent reader. I think the links are more valuable. Though if you have the time, your right, read the whole article, ask questions, and leave real feedback. Thanks for the feedback Ken.

Very sensible advice and just to prove I did actually read the post, look, no link back! ;-)

Building links through comments is an excellent advice. However, I think it works best for niche blogs, because the niche blog with your comment is more likely to turn up in Google's searches than if you comment on a "seo" blog, there are simply too many of them. That's what I think anyway.

admin @ 5:01 pm:

yeah you might be right Kopi. And usually people with seo blogs are in it only for the money and don't reply to questions and such. Niche blogs usually reply.

Great post!

What I always tell people is too consider leaving Blog comments like you do with Forum Marketing, it's the same idea. Add value to the post or thread, give your feedback that adds to the topic and never just post something to post. Contribute to the converstaion is a lot better and the value you add to the topic will probably end up getting you some clicks back.

Great post and blog! Love it.

Sincerely,

Jamie Boyle
