Why Should I Comment?

How to Blog.

You have just finished reading a blog post, and you nod your head, it was a good post, and then you click to the next website in your browser. You’ve done that millions of times, why would you do anything else? Why should you bother commenting? Sure you enjoyed it, maybe even learned some things, but your a busy person, you can’t afford the time to comment.

If that’s you, and I know that we are all guilty of that a lot, then it’s time to change. If you run a blog, and you want it to get more traffic, links, PR, comments… you NEED to start commenting Alot. That’s the way most popular sites have started off, from commenting up to 50+ times a day. The three keys to getting a popular site is have great original content, to post frequently, and to comment insane amounts.

On December 2nd, I had a commenting spree. And I sent out about 30-40 comments in one day, which honestly isn’t a ton, but it is when you are really busy. That one day of commenting created incredible results for my blog, in all aspects. My Alexa ranking was 87K for that one day dropping my total down to 153K, my subscribers jumped by almost twenty. And my Technorati, dropped below 100K to 88K because of the new links I got. And these new readers are now coming back.

Not only did this give me a lot of traffic, but it put my blog out for new visitors to see. I got almost 20 new subscribers in two days, and many new links from it. When you comment repeatably on a site, then you can get on the top of their top commentator lists, which gives you a free link as well, and also more traffic because people are curious who the top people are. Commenting is a must for all bloggers, and by getting yourself into the habit of commenting after every post, you’ll greatly help your blog. And not only that, but if you do it right, then you can help your site’s search engine rankings as well. That’s four pluses right there, and now I realize it takes some time, but if you can get in a habit you will immediately start seeing results.

Another important reason, is the relationships you can start to develop. Relationships are really underrated on the internet, but knowing the right people can be hugely helpful for promotion. You can get guest posting opportunities, do advertising together, or you can even start sites together, combining your online talents. Besides my site’s results for proof, there are three bloggers who are pinnacle examples of the commenting art. They are what I like to call the “Comment Kings of the Blogging World,” or just “Comment Kings” for short. These guys are EVERYWHERE. You couldn’t escape them even if you wanted to. It doesn’t matter what your blog is about. I think they should create a wordpress plugin that can block the “Comment Kings,” because if you create a blog on the Internet, they’ll find you and leave a comment lol. And their sites are definitely showing the results of their persistent effort.

They are,

Dennis Edell from http://www.directsaleswebmarketing.com
Danny Cooper from http://www.linkersblog.com
Yan Susanto from http://www.thoushallblog.com

So what does all this mean for you?

Step One, go onto your google account, and create a google.com/reader account.
Step Two, all the blogs that you read, add their urls onto the account by typing in the urls in the add subscription box.
Step Three, check this every day if you can, and everytime they write a new post, comment on it.
Step Four, go to these three secret sites, if you are Yan, Danny, or Dennis reading this post, you aren’t allowed to click on these. :)

Secret URL 1
Secret URL 2
Secret URL 3

Why spend all the effort trying to find the new sites to comment on? Yan, Dennis, and Danny, already do the work for us, just follow their accounts, from the secret urls, and then they will show you lots of new sites, that will be easy to get on the top commentator lists, and thus get free links from. You will be able to start building relationships by becoming a frequent commentator, and you will be able to get traffic back to your site as well.

Step Five, add these new sites to your google reader, (maybe on another account) and start commenting on these as well.

I promise you will start seeing results in no time.

All of this is very true. When you start aggressively commenting you do start to build relationships with other bloggers and see an increase in traffice, comments etc. I guess google reader is pretty popular I use for my RSS reader Feed Demon It’s a free download desktop application. I like it alot. At any rate the value of commenting can not be overstated! ;-)

Really great article on blogging and I will set up the Reader after my comment here. I sure do appreciate valuable content. It is super cool to learn something, anything from visiting a link clicked on thru twitter. Look forward to your future posts.

Dear Technorati

Can you please hide my account now before the top commentators’ place becoming very crowded at the top? Ooops, I clicked the link.

Thanks for the mention, buddy. I have a hard time trying to cope with the other two. In all honesty, they are better than me.

Anyway, you could also register with Backtype to find and follow anyone who is already a member. Technorati only shows comments on dofollow blogs and those in the top commentators spot while Backtype is a little bit more.

Cheers
Yan

No Problem Dennis. If I had the money lol I’d pay you to comment for my site. Just out of curiosity, what do you do for a living? Because it seems like you’re able to do blog work during the day.

Commenting has become a great and easy technique to implement for anyone serious about blogging. The benefits are like what you say which are traffic, link love as well as relationship building. I wouldn’t have know Yan or Dennis should I not used comment marketing as a strategy. Great article Jonathan =)

LOL i’ve been wondering a little lately about those that pay for comments. ;)

Actually I do work online “full time”. It’s currently quoted because even though I’m here 8-50 hrs per day, I’m not yet making a “full time” income.

It’s a rather long story…short version is, I was somewhat forced from part time to full time at home after back & knee injuries took me out of the workforce.

Not too many bosses appreciate you walking around (or lying down lol) every hour or two. :)

Ah I see Dennis, I’m sorry to hear that. I wish you the best of luck in your online career.

@Dennis,

I am very sad to hear that you have injured yourself and was taken out of the workforce. But there is always another alternative which is what you are doing right now. All the best in your Internet career buddy.

Commentng on other blogs is one of the best things you can do for your own blog. I have been out of the “comment circuit” for a while for one reason or another. But I started all of my blogs with a mission to comment on 10 blogs per day per blog. It doesn’t seem like much, but it builds. And then I started slacking.

I really enjoyed your blog, especially this post! Would you mind if I put a link back from my blog at http://www.whiterabbitcult.com?

My first visit! I arrived due to your follow on twitter! Thank you. Looks like it will be an interesting and an informative ride.

My big question… WHO ARE YOU? And why the apparent anonymity? Are you one person or more than one? I like to know who am reading and learning from.

If you are offering a service and your expertise it would seem natural a name would go along with it! (Maybe everyone else knows who you are…. but I don’t!)

I’ll watch the action and follow you on twitter.

Your visitors are welcome to follow me too.

Looking forward to reading your reviews.

Hello Amy, there is anyomity, because I am reconstructing my about page. Sorry, you caught me at a bad moment, I actually just took it down yesterday. My name is Jonathan Muller, and I am the writer of this blog. There is a friend of mine involved, who is the programmer, but I am the face of the site. I hope that helps.

Great tip about reader.. It actually never occurred to me. Don’t think it’ll do a lot of good for my site commenting on ones like this (mine is about AFL football), but none the less you seem to know more than me.

Thank you for the great advice - I usually do try and comment once in a while and often hold off on a comment - but now I understand better how important commenting is! Thanks - glad to have met you on Twitter!

This is really interesting! I comment about 20 times a day at the most, mostly because it’s really fun and gives my site exposure. :) I never knew some people comment that many times a day though. I think I will try to post more comments when I have the time.

Commenting has got to be one of the best and quickest ways to grow your subscriber count! But don’t leave boring comments because those can easily make you and your site seem unattractive (at least that’s my opinion). Leave something worth saying…

I’ve developed a lot of great relationships with writers outside of my niche. Even if/when I didn’t visit their blogs for a while, we still stay in touch via email which really is pretty cool when you think about it. To me, that says something ya know.
