How to Blog (series on SEO)

Author: Will Fowler | Filed under: Tips

One of the greatest ways to advertise your blog, is to comment on others, A lot. A good amount of the top bloggers today got where they are by leaving 50-100 comments a day. Now I don’t expect you to be able to do that, I mean who has the time for that… However, I try and comment 10-20 times a day. Usually it is a little bit fewer then that, but I try and do around that.

So if you comment on blogs, on at least a semi regular basis, then I’m sure you’ve seen this before.

It’s a picture of the information you fill in to leave a comment. Now up till recently I had been filling out the name box like this,

But then one day I had an idea. When you comment on a blog, if you get in the top commentator list, it is a backlink to your site. And then suddenly I realized, the name is the anchortext of the link! Now you may not realize at first the importance of that discovery, so let me explain. For all the people who comment a lot, and are getting links back to their site, they could be using the name box as the anchor text for the links to their site. To test this out, I filled out comments for a couple days in the name box like this.

Wanting to see if it would help with SEO purposes, sure enough within a week, (which is not very much at all,) my site was on the first page on Google for the search term, “how to get traffic.” It has slipped a bit to the second page because I’ve changed my keyword now, but a week before this, I was not even in the top 500! It was then I realized the incredible potential for this discovery. Not only are you advertising your blog and getting traffic by commenting on blogs, you are also getting free links, and really helping the SEO of your site.

So now I decided to really implement this great find. Because the term, how to get traffic didn’t get quite as many searches a day as I wanted, I decided to switch again to a new one. Now I fill it out like this,

If you’ve seen that term before on a site, in a top commentator list then that’s me. The term how to blog, is a much more competitive term then how to get traffic, according to the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, it gets about 74,000 hits per month, which should be a nice amount of traffic if I can get on the first page.

Now I’ve only been gathering links for my site under that term for less then a week, and yet already. From not being in the first 500 (probably more but I didn’t look further) mastersofseo is currently number 58. Which isn’t high enough to start getting traffic, but to be in the top 100 after only a couple days, with no extra effort from me is incredible. And just think of the massive amounts of traffic that will be visiting my site in a couple weeks/months however long it takes to crack the first page.

Now after I realized this, I was like well, this is relatively obvious, I’m sure everybody else knows about it. However, Like nobody realizes it!!! Look at this picture of John Chow’s top commentator list.

Now those anchor texts are fine if your trying to rank for, TYCP Entertainment Magazine, ZK@WebTrafficROI, Keral Patel, Ben Pei, Affiliate Confession, BusinessX, Steven-Sanders, Danny Cooper, Ryan McLean, and Mike Huang. But those search terms will get tiny amounts of traffic compared to how to blog, or something along that lines. When I was using mastersofseo as the name of my comments, I was helping my site rank for mastersofseo, but I already rank for that lol. And unfortunately nobody types that in anyway, so my SEO tip for you is, to find a search term that your site can rank for, and then check the amount of searches using the Google Keyword Tool. If it’s getting enough, then make that term the search term of your comments, just make sure that it is something relevant to your blog, because remember, the point is not to spam, it’s to advertise your site. My blog is about how to blog, and so I’m not spamming.  This tip is really useful and I hope your able to put it to good use.
