While it is difficult to get multiple first page results for your organization you can give potential visitors multiple ways to find your site by leveraging these directories SEO abilities.
1. Search Engine Locals- Google, Yahoo, and Bing all have local services to help consumers find the regional xyz store, organization, etc. These results frequently show up first in SERP’s so register an information rich profile at each service, and dominate.

4. Merchant Circle- Merchant Circle is a directory of local businesses, and their profiles are quickly indexed, and often rank quite well.
5. Service Magic- Servicemagic.com is a paid directory of service industry professionals. While it does cost money they can get you ranked well in local searches.
6. Yelp.com- Yelp.com is a local business directory that allows local people to review area businesses. These pages do very well in regional SEO.

It is a very useful and applied post.
@sam you are correct about that I have generated a lot of focused traffic for small businesses with Google Local. But also grab a Yahoo and Bing local account don’t assume your customer is loyal to Google or as tech savvy as you.
I think that Google business listing provides amazing results alone. Is there a correlation between Google Adwords and Google business listing? It seems that times in which I invested a bunch in Adwords, my Google business listing would drop a couple of pegs. Pretty strange, huh.

Great tips. Some people tend to over look the power of local listings and local rankings.

it seems that most people like to use google,
at least here in China, although we have the local search engine as “baidu”.
But people in Hongkong China, prefer to use yahoo a lot.
anyway, thanks for your sharing.
I’d heard that China’s own search engine had something like 70% of the market in China, and way more than Google. And of course, Google has now threatened to go leave China because of the hacking incident recently – not sure what’s happening on that front now though.
Very cool list, thanks. I didn’t know some of these existed.

Bing uses yellowpages.com for as their results in local search. A good tip for people to keep in mind when signing up for local directories is that to select the ones that are a good fit for your business as some tend to overdo it and end up pushing their own website to the 2nd page.
Local search will play a big role this year and staying on top of your own results as well as competitors will keep a company a step ahead of all the rest.

Hi Will
That’s a great list, I’ll be sure to use it. One thing I would say is worth doing if your tryng to rank highly for a specific area such as Hotels or restuants is to look and see where the top ranks are getting their citations from in a very competative area (such as a food district of a large city).
great article well written, i always love reading posts here
There is a good advantage of listing in the local SEO at time, this top 10 will like help to achieve it.
Your retweet button is hidden nicely, you might want to think on enlarging it or moving it to as more prominent spot.

Apart from Google Local Search everything else is not going to benefit much to you. I am telling you from personal experience.
Most of the people search Google for all kind of information including local.
Great list. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been using some of these. I’ll definitely try the others.
Good directory list here that’s sure to help out your SEO. I’ve been using some of these, but I’ll be sure to submit to more directories.
Great list! People tend to overlook the benefits of local listings even though they can boost your SEO efforts.

I agree that local listings can be great for small regional businesses. What I like about yahoo and bing local is they do not require “phone verification”, although the postcards do no always show up, or get lost in translation….
